There’s been evidence of plenty of Christmas spirit throughout Richmond in the weeks before Dec. 25.

At The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Steveston, the team, under the guidance of owner Steven Chang, has been collecting non-perishable food donations for the Richmond Food Bank, with specially-decorated donation bins set up at Coast Capital Savings, and Steveston Community Centre.

The food drive, which collected enough food for nearly 500 people, was organized by staff and volunteers at The Medicine Shoppe, who dedicated their time after school and on weekends. The effort was in keeping with Chang’s philosophy of giving back to the community and helping others.

Meanwhile, students, staff and parents at St. Joseph the Worker elementary school held their annual toy drive late last month, with students bringing in toys that were donated to the Richmond Christmas Fund and B.C. Children’s Hospital.

The school also held their 22nd annual Guardians Gala, a semi-formal event held every November to raise funds in support of the school and its students.

Meanwhile, the Country Meadows Senior Men’s Golf Club, founded in 1995, has been helping local families in need, including 11 families this year who will receive children’s clothes, gifts, household items and a Christmas dinner for eight thanks to more than $4,000 in donations.

The club also supports prostate cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency, and has raised more than $1.3 million over the years.
